The Petoskey stone is fossilized pre-historic rugose coral. It consists of tightly packed, six-sided corallites, which are the skeletons of the once-living coral polyps. It is over 360 million years ago from the Devonian period. They are beautiful when polished and have become one of the most popular souvenirs of Michigan.
