The Petoskey stone is fossilized pre-historic rugose coral. It consists of tightly packed, six-sided corallites, which are the skeletons of the once-living coral polyps. It is over 360 million years ago from the Devonian period. They are beautiful when polished and have become one of the most popular souvenirs of Michigan.
Leland Blue, specifically, is the mix of blue glass with other chemicals — but this varying chemical medley can also cause the slag to appear purple, gray, or a shade of green. It's a waste product from the smelting process used in the late 1800s by the Leland Lake Superior Iron Company. Today, people find this slag material on the shores of Leland's beaches.
